Linda Munn, Hiraina Marsden and Jan Dobson designed what became known as the Tino Rangatiratanga flag in 1989. The black represents Te Kore (the void), the space beyond the world of everyday experience. White represents Te Ao Marama, the world of light. Red represents coming into being and life, and Papatūānuku, the earth mother. The koru (spiral, symbolising an unfurling fern frond) in the centre suggests the unfolding and renewal of life.

Linda Munn is the sole surviving creator and we have obtained her permission to use the design.  In accordance with her kaupapa we have pledged to koha a portion of the proceeds of every sale from our Tino range to NZ Womens Refuge.

Women’s Refuge offers support ranging from help accessing healthcare and counselling, support with MSD and budgeting advice, obtaining a protection order and legal assistance, finding a place to live, helping to fund activities for tamariki and establishing relationships with schools and teachers, even meeting basic needs like food, clothing, and much more.
